Message from Therapist

There are two primary areas of focus in my work. The first is supporting married couples who desire to take a proactive approach to preserving and growing the love and friendship in their relationship. The second area is supporting parents in their efforts to raise respectful, responsible, and happy children from a young age.

Deepening Your Marital Friendship

Couples often first seek counseling support for their relationship when stress reaches significant levels, and it is important that effective therapists are available to help. My specialty is to work with couples in such a way as to prevent these difficulties from arising in the first place. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," as the saying goes.

I offer topical and positively-themed enrichment sessions to couples who see the value of an approach that both protects and promotes their love and commitment. Some might consider these sessions 'preventative maintenance' for a marriage. The sessions are relevant to the relational dynamics between any husband and wife, and are purposeful in nature.  Common focus areas include communication, emotional attunement, and coalescence around a vision for the family. Most couples seek appointments monthly or every other month with an ongoing 'marital tune-up' mindset.

Strengthening Parental Unity

In my experience, the ‘Parenting the Love and Logic Way’® program offers the best practical strategies for parents to invite the respectful and responsible behavior of their children, especially in the elementary and middle school years.  I have enjoyed being an independent facilitator of these workshops for years, and I personalize them to each couple with whom I work.  The series involves six in-person workshop sessions of about 75 minutes in length.  There is substantial video content, with meaningful and humorous stories told by the originators of this approach to illustrate key ideas.  Sprinkled throughout are little conversational opportunities for a couple to share their own parenting experiences and see what they'd like to focus on together after each session.  The topics are universally relevant for just about any family. Such as: Putting an End to Back-Talk/Arguing/Begging ... Teaching Responsibility without Losing Our Kids' Love ... Avoiding Power Struggles ... and so on.  I am also glad to be contacted if there is interest for me to be the facilitator of a class for a group of parents.

Contact me via email at robertbardercounseling@gmail.com if you'd like to inquire about either of these offerings for married couples and parents!

More About Robert Barder, MA, LMFT, LCPC

I specialize in working with married couples to deepen their marital bond and to strengthen parental unity.

I believe that trust is among the most important qualities in any marriage or family relationship. There’s not much mystery to the development of trust. It grows when any of us takes practical steps that convey that we will do whatever is helpful or necessary to benefit a relationship. This often involves genuine humility and a willingness to grow on the part of each person, including when the desire is to move a marriage or a parent-child relationship from 'good' to 'great.' My goal is to offer meaningful avenues for the strengthening of this trust, avenues where I can provide accompaniment with my respect, my compassion, and my gentle sense of humor amidst life’s challenges.
