Like in any field, finding a psychotherapist can be like walking in a minefield. We look for professionals we can trust with our vulnerabilities, lean on in difficult times, and assume respect for our values and inherent worth. However, this is not always the case.
Studies have shown the most important part of what makes therapy effective is a trusting relationship. That being said, I hear about Catholics hesitating to reach out for support out of fear of their faith and beliefs being judged, misunderstood or not being able to trust the therapist's moral compass.
Naturally, every human has biases, and I do not pretend I do not have any. I was raised in a secular diverse Canada as a Polish Roman Catholic. I had the honour of witnessing my family recover from alcoholism and depression, all thanks to their growing faith and spirituality. As the son of an immigrant blue-collar family, I adopted the benefits of a hardworking, traditional, and religious nuclear family.
My Catholic values apply to everything I say and do — at least that is the goal. I have an educational background in science, philosophy, and psychology, with specific training in psychotherapy and spirituality. I do not pretend to be qualified to offer Spiritual Direction, but I can promise spirituality and your relationship with God is most welcome in psychotherapy sessions.
God bless,
Dominic
